- A long, challenging Open Championship links course with narrow fairways,
delightful dogleg holes, and of course the world famous postage stamp hole.
- As with most 'Royal' clubs, one presumes Troon has held its regal title for centuries
but with Troon only since 1978, the club's centenary year. This makes Royal Troon the
youngest 'Royal' golf club in the world.
It is also a relative newcomer as an Open Championship venue. The first Open event was
played here in 1923. In that competition, Gene Sarazen, then in his early twenties, failed
to qualify. 50 years later, Sarazen came back, then in his early seventies, for the
1973 Open and holed-in-one the notorious Par 3, Postage Stamp.
Troon has seen much wonderful golf during its six Open Championships which have been won
by Arthur Havers(1923), A.D. Locke (1950), Arnold Palmer (1962), Tom Weiskopf (1973), Tom
Watson (1982) and Mark Calcavecchia (1989) and now by Justin Leonard (1997)
There are fine views over the Firth of Clyde with the mountains of Arran in the distance,
with Ailsa Craig to the south.
