Muirfield Golf Course, Scotland
This was a boggy piece of low lying links, developed by The
Honourable Company as a golf course in 1891. They even had Tom Morris
come down from St Andrews to help them mark out a rough course.
Soon after this, David Plenderleith did most of the detailed work. And his work
was later refined by Harry Colt and Tom Simpson. The final development of the
course was done by Robert Maxwell in the 1920s and the Muirfield course
has remained essentially the same since then
Muirfield has now become one of the top half dozen courses in the world. It
has hosted 14 Open Championships. Winners have included many of the all time
greats of golf. Braid, Vardon, Hagen, Cotton, Nicklaus, Player, Trevino,
Watson and Faldo
